Students use the poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" from William Carlos Williams to discover for themselves what the word 'depend' means. Discuss with the students what they have that their lives depend upon. This can also be used to help summarize a story.
Here is an example what is possible from a fourth grader:
Each Other
So much depends upon
each other
helping, saving, finding, trading.
Without each other
we are nothing
without each other
we cease to exist
